Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is located in the Sonoran desert in Southwestern Arizona.  Headquarters is 34 miles south of Ajo, Arizona and 5 miles north of the Mexican border.  This dramatic desert park is a spectacular assortment of mountains, canyons, cactus forests, hidden tinajas, incredible sunsets and sunrises.  Organ Pipe is a winter paradise and surprisingly very lush and green.   Daytime temperatures range from as high as 110+ degrees in the summer to 60-70 degrees in the winter.  Grade school through high school, medical clinic, house rentals, churches and limited shopping are located in Ajo  There is very affordable housing available in Ajo and Why.  The general population is approximately 2500.  Full service facilities and shopping are available in Phoenix or Tucson, approximately 150 miles from the Monument. The staff of this park will warm your heart as much as the sunsets!  Park housing may be available.


 


 


You will need to successfully complete a background investigation before you can be appointed into this position.


 


This is a TEMPORARY appointment not to exceed 1039 hours; may be shortened depending on agency needs. Tour of duty Monday - Friday 7:00am - 3:30 pm.  


  


Incumbent of this position will be required to wear a uniform & comply with NPS standards.


 



Major Duties

 
This position is primarily a laborer position using hand tools and wheel barrels while assisting journeyman level employees accomplish tasks such as removal of old concrete, setting concrete forms, pouring new concrete.  Other duties include custodial, trash pick-up, and general laborer.  The work involves the use of common hand tools and simple power equipment.  Daily tasks require moderately heavy physical effort.
 
 
Working Conditions:         
               
Work is performed outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions. Work requires frequent bending, stooping, walking, and standing; and working in cramped positions and climbing.

A 5-point preference is granted to veterans who entered the military service prior to October 15, 1976, or who served in a military action for which they received a Campaign Badge or Expeditionary Medal, including the award of the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for service in Bosnia during Operation Joint Endeavor, November 20, 1995 - December 20, 1996, and Operation Joint Guard, December 20, 1996 - to be determined.


 


A 5-point preference is also granted to veterans who served on active duty during the Gulf War from August 2, 1990 through January 2, 1992. The law grants preference to anyone who is otherwise eligible and who served on active duty during this period regardless of where the person served or for how long. "Otherwise eligible" means that the person must have been released from the service under honorable conditions and must have served a minimum of two years on active duty, or if a Reservist, must have served the full period for which called to active duty. If you are claiming a 5-point veteran preference you must provide a DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, or other proof of entitlement.
