Job Listing: Senior Manager – Applications Software

We are looking for an experienced, talented, independent Senior Manager of Applications Software to manage our Video Software Engineering Applications team, and to help drive the architecture, design and development of our software applications. These applications include Electronic Program Guides (EPGs), enhanced TV (eTV) user agents and interactive applications, and Java applications. This is a high-level engineering management position of systems that comprise end-to-end server-client infrastructures. The individual must have experience managing small engineering groups, and must be technically competent to engage in engineering discussions with the team and external engineering entities. In addition, the individual must have experience in software architecture, design and development for embedded environments and server infrastructure, technical project management skills and the ability to drive 3rd party vendors to meet our product goals.

Responsibilities:

Manage and lead a small group of engineers in technical requirements gathering, architecture, design, development and support of application software solutions consistent with product and technical roadmaps.

Deliver stable and reliable application software that consistently meets or exceeds product requirements in a timely manner and within budget.

Lead and motivate the applications software team to successfully achieve company, department and individual goals. Develop and maintain good engineering practices and procedures.

Effectively prioritize, identify and delegate tasks to the applications team engineers consistent with their background and experience.

Develop and maintain an environment where application team members interface with other teams like the platform team, our Joint Venture engineering teams, video product, test and operations teams to define technical requirements of the applications, evaluate test plans, establish trial criteria, and provide engineering support to flesh out product and operational requirements.

Effectively identify technical requirements of the applications, and develop architecture from technical requirements.

Create a detailed design to meet technical requirements and architecture.

Assist in vendor technical selection and management including specification, RFP/RFI development, and vendor evaluation. Selection process must be based on technical and design requirements.

Evaluate and recommend new technologies to advance the state of the art in video software.

Evaluate product roadmaps; provide engineering review, scoping and recommendations on the design of products to meet the needs of Comcast product initiatives.

Oversee the development of internal and third party software required to support the detailed designs.

Drive the continuous improvement of deployed systems by consistently looking for ways to reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Support operations by providing sustained engineering support for all responsible systems and technologies.

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance.

Required Skills

8+ years of increasing responsibility in software engineering design and development of video technologies and systems.

3-5 years in a technical management role, leading a team of engineers, managing tasks, priorities and schedules.

Experience in developing applications using programming languages such as C, C++, Java or equivalents.

Experience developing a runtime application in a limited memory/processor environment; settop box development experience preferred.

Experience working in either a SA or Motorola network feeding video.

Experience in technical project management.

Experience developing engineering budgets desirable.

Experience in a “triple-play” (voice/video/data) environment is desirable.

Familiarity with product development lifecycle processes, procedures and tools.

A BS or equivalent degree in Engineering or Computer Sciences. Relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of educational experience.

Strong communication and presentation skills. The ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

Experience designing and developing technology solutions to meet specific product requirements, identifying gaps and omissions, and designing end-to-end solutions.

Familiarity with standards efforts in cable is desirable.
