* Manages 388 national park units and 542 wildlife refuges.
* Employs over 75,000 individuals at approximately 2,400 locations across the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories, and freely associated states who work with thousands of state, local, and public interest groups to help cities and towns address their natural resource needs.



Major Duties

<P>The Office of Wildland Fire Coordination (OWFC) oversees and coordinates the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) wildland fire management program in its entirety and ensures coordination with other federal agencies, particularly the USDA Forest Service, state foresters, tribes, the National Association of Counties, and a variety of stakeholder groups representing volunteer fire fighters, environmental interests, industry, and others.  The Director, OWFC develops, implements, and coordinates the Department’s wildland fire management policy and programs including policies for firefighter safety, fuels treatment to reduce hazards and restore ecosystems, biomass utilization, smoke management, emergency stabilization and rehabilitation, suppression, rural fire and community assistance, and education.  </p><p>The Director, OWFC provides departmental leadership and is responsible for overall project coordination, management, and implementation of the National Fire Plan among the four land-managing bureaus (Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs) and the Geological Survey.  The Director, OWFC coordinates with the Forest Service, the Council on Environmental Quality, and the Environmental Protection Agency to insure consistent and unified implementation of the National Fire Plan among the principal federal land-managing and regulatory agencies.  The Director, OWFC coordinates implementation of the National Fire Plan with state, tribal, and local governments, the Western Governor’s Association, National Association of Counties, and numerous non-government partners.  </p><p>The Director, OWFC represents the Department on National Fire Plan implementation issues with the Congress and the Office of Management and Budget.  The Director, OWFC insures that appropriate disciplines and program functions from all DOI bureaus are consulted and involved in implementation of the National Fire Plan. The Director, OWFC leads an Interagency Team in developing the overall strategy for implementing the National Fire Plan, ensuring that the DOI’s implementation strategy is developed in concert with a concurrent Forest Service approach and that the process and outputs are compatible.  The Director, OWFC provides oversight of the Department’s budget documents for the Wildland Fire Appropriation to insure support for National Fire Plan implementation and that appropriate reporting standards and accountability measures are met.  The Director, OWFC organizes appropriate staff resources within the Department and provides oversight and management to complete a cohesive strategy for reducing the risks and consequences of catastrophic wildland fire on all DOI lands.  The Director, OWFC reviews proposed legislation pertaining to the National Fire Plan, management of fire-adapted ecosystems, and emergency fire rehabilitation and restoration.  The Director, OWFC serves as the departmental lead for the integration of National Fire Plan decisions into ecosystem and landscape level planning processes, with considerations for effects of fire exclusion, management-induced changes in ecosystems, and legal mandates.  The Director, OWFC develops procedures, develops data, and provides fire ecology input that integrates fire management into the land management planning process.</P>
