Duty Locations

 1 vacancy - Jackson, MS National Indian Gaming Commission in an independent Federal regulatory agency whose primary mission is to regulate gaming activities on Indian lands for the purpose of shielding Indian tribes from organized crime and other corrupting influences; to ensure that Indian tribes are the primary beneficiaries of gaming revenue; and to assure that gaming is conducted fairly and honestly by both operators and players.

 


To achieve these goals, the Commission is authorized to conduct investigations; undertake enforcement actions, including the issuance of violation, assessment of civil fines, and/or issuance of closure orders; conduct background investigations; conduct audits; and review and approve Tribal gaming ordinances. 


This position is in the excepted service and not subject to competitive service procedures.  Merit promotion procedures do not apply.


 


The salary range for this position is for a general schedule equivalent of GS-12 in the "Rest of U.S." Pay Scale.


 


The National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) seeks to hire a Field Investigator for the Flowood, Mississippi satellite office.  Under the Region Director and the Director of Enforcement, the Field Investigator is responsible for monitoring the gaming activities of Indian tribes and to insure compliance with tribal, state, and federal gaming laws and regulations.


 


This position requires 11 or more nights of travel per month.

Major Duties


The Field Investigator will act as NIGC's representative to tribal governments; provide training and assistance to tribal gaming agencies, gaming operators and management contractors; maintain liaison with tribal, local, state, and federal law enforcement and regulatory agencies; conduct investigations; analyze data; prepare reports; testify in administrative and other proceedings and attend staff meetings and training sessions.

Qualifications




Applicants must have strong skills in both oral and written communication and possess good interpersonal skills. 




 




Prior experience in regulatory agency and financial background is preferred.




 




An undergraduate degree in criminal justice, public administration, or business is preferred but not required.




 




Knowledge or experience in some aspect of gaming will be an asset. 




 




Candidates must be capable of handling multiple tasks.




 




Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT




A preliminary background check must be completed before a new employee can begin work with the National Indian Gaming Commission.  The preliminary background check consists of a search of Office of Personnel Management and Department of Defense background investigation files and an FBI National Criminal History Fingerprint Check; it may take up to 3 weeks to complete.  If selected for this position, you will be extended a tentative offer of employment pending a satisfactory background check.  Current Federal employees or other individuals with an existing completed background investigation may not be required to undergo another background check; these will be handled on a case-by-case basis in coordination with the Bureau Security Office.




If you are a male applicant who was born after 12/31/1959 and are required to register under the Military Selective Service Act, the Defense Authorization Act of 1986 requires that you be registered or you are not eligible for appointment in this agency.




 




New appointees must serve a 2 year trial period (1 year for preference eligibles).
