The Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) is responsible for providing comprehensive benefits and services to America's veterans and their families, including compensation and pension, education, vocational rehabilitation, loan guaranty, and insurance benefits.  A position at the VBA may find you working one-on-one with veterans and their families, or developing systems and procedures that manage benefits and services for veterans.



Major Duties

On a daily basis, collects, reviews, and places in terminal digit order, all unattached mail for which veterans’ claims folders need to be retrieved and distributed to identified locations.  Pulls folders to be associated with mail daily.  Pulls lists of folders and delivers to the designated location.   Re-files folders daily.  Drop files specifically identified loose mail into folders in the file banks.  Performs claims folder searches and expedite duties for the Triage Team of the Veterans Service Center.  Utilizes computer systems (primarily SHARE, BDN and COVERS) in identifying locations of folders, recording search mail research for no record mail, and searching for missing folders.  Reads, analyzes, searches for, and locates folders.  Accuracy in the performance of these duties is paramount.  Duties require at least six (6) hours per day standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling and movement of folders on tables and seven shelf storage units.  The remainder of the work is sedentary.

      2.    Form 306, Declaration for Federal Employment, and




A copy of your DD 214 (Member Copy 4) verifying military service, and, if appropriate, a completed SF15, Application for 10-point Veterans Preference, and a letter from the Dept of Veterans Affairs or branch of the Armed Forces certifying receipt of service-connected disability or disability pension.


Displaced employees applying under CTAP or ICTAP must provide proof of eligibility for the special selection priority by submitting a Reduction-in-Force (RIF) separation notice, certification of expected separation, or similar agency certification.  Individuals who have special selection eligibility must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection.


Current or former Federal employees (Reinstatement/Transfer eligibles)  applying for change to lower grade, reassignment, or reinstatement must also submit a copy of an SF 50, Notification of Personnel Action, showing grade, step, salary and verifying competitive status and a copy of their most recent performance appraisal.


Applicants wishing to substitute education for experience must submit a legible college transcript or transcripts.  If selected, an official transcript(s) must be submitted before entrance on duty.

To qualify based on experience:

GS-4:  One year of general experience.

General experience:  One year of progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a file clerk.

GS-4:  Two years above the high school level.  Transcripts are required.
