Job Listing: Environmental Health & Safety Specialist

Ensures the safety and health of all employees through awareness training, compliance with corporate policies and procedures and all federal, state and local safety and environmental regulations for employee safety, hazardous materials management and environmental compliance.

Participates in the investigation of work related incidents, injuries and near misses.

Assesses hazards from a safety and environmental perspective for day-to-day business operations and makes recommendations to control identified hazards.

Participates in moderate-to-high risk departmental safety meetings (i.e., laboratory, warehouse, production, etc.) to provide support and updates as necessary and to listen to employee concerns and suggestions.

Works with moderate-to-high risk departments to evaluate potentially hazardous job tasks and update Activity Hazard Analysis forms accordingly.

Performs industrial hygiene evaluations to characterize potential air and noise exposure concerns.

Performs day-to-day safety evaluations of moderate-to-high risk work environments; this includes daily facility walks, evaluation of employee safety compliance and behavior, participating in the completion of quarterly IIPP Safety inspections, evaluating laboratory and chemical storage practices, and evaluating implementation of ergonomic rotation and exercise programs within the production departments.

Participates on emergency response team as necessary.

Provides technical experience to employees and management.
Participates in the development of safety training outlines and presentations.

Performs safety training for all employee levels.

Supports the EHS Manager in the management and general maintenance of the Hazard Communication Program, more specifically the organization of Material Safety Data Sheets for purchased raw materials and R&D hazardous materials.

Required Skills

Requires BS/BA with emphasis in Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene with associated microbiology and/or chemistry discipline (or equivalent combination of education and/or work experience may be accepted).

Two years in environmental health and safety field preferably in medical, biotech or pharmaceutical industry.

Certified in 40-hour HAZWOPER with 8-hour annual refresher training.

Complete waste management certification (annually) and DOT Hazardous Material training (every three years).

1. Familiar with health and safety terminology and programs; federal, state, and local health and safety and environmental regulations. Proficient in researching applicable regulatory references

2. Excellent organizational, verbal, and written skills

3. Strong analytical skills

4. Ability to communicate effectively and interact with a diverse employee population

5. Self-motivating and independent

6. Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
