Job Listing: Research Nurse

Responsibilities:
*Study Procedures / specimen collection
*Patient management
*Data management
*Interaction with PRB physicians and co-workers
*Interaction with hospital staff
*Design and implement outreach programs to inform nurses and midwives in the region of the existence of research protocols at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and of the eligibility criteria and methods for referring patients.
*Obtain informed consent from parents or legal guardian (s) for patients eligible to participate in research protocols being performed under the subcontract.
*Obtain biological material or assist with obtaining biological material such as maternal plasma, serum, urine, placenta bed biopsies, myometrium, umbilical cord arterial and venous blood, spinal fluid, tracheal secretions, etc. to comply with research protocols that are being performed under the subcontract at the Women’s and Children’s hospital.
*Provide nursing coordinator services for research protocols that are being performed
*At the research prenatal clinic;
*When the patient is hospitalized for pregnancy complications and/or labor and delivery;
*During the neonatal period;
*During infant follow up.
*Provide prenatal and neonatal nursing care and nursing assistance to research subjects in keeping with standard of practice.
*Attend periodic meetings with project staff to discuss the following topics:
*Identify eligible patient for enrollment in protocols;
*Review compliance with research protocols during the previous period;
*Assign responsibilities to maintain compliance with protocols;
*Identify and report obstacles to research and recruitment of patients in research protocols that are being performed under this subcontract.
*Provide nursing assistance services as follows:
*Obtain medical records for patients attending the clinic from the receptionist or medical records clerk.
*Obtain and record patient weight, height, and vital signs (blood pressure, pulse and temperature).
*Instruct patients in the procedure for the collection of urine samples and perform dipstick examinations.
*Perform venipuncture to obtain blood specimens in accordance with research protocols and record this action in the medical record.
*Obtain other appropriate biological specimens according to policies and procedures set forth in the manual of operations and the protocols.
*Prepare labels for specimens, label specimens and process specimens according to research protocols.
*Assist physician and nurses in the conduction of examinations as requested.
*Escort patients and their families within the prenatal clinic (reception area, examination room/ultrasound room, laboratory, antepartum testing) and direct them to other areas of the hospital as needed.
*Change exam table paper; appropriately discard soiled linen and biohazardous material after each patient encounter.
*Answer prenatal clinic telephone, document calls from patients in a logbook and immediately transfer urgent calls to the appropriate PRB or contract personnel. Record messages for all other calls.
*Maintain sufficient supplies to carry out the tasks under this contract by:
*Conducting a weekly inventory of linen and supplies allocated to the prenatal clinic.
*Determining the need for supplies and prepare a list on a weekly basis or more frequently if required for the continued operation of the prenatal clinic.
*Preparing supply requisitions for items requiring purchase.
*Stocking examination rooms with lined and supplies according to guidelines.
*Participate in orientation of all new personnel (e.g. data entry clerk, medical assistant, medical records clerk) as requested by the Project Director.
