Job Description: Chemical engineer 3 (ChE3)
A rapidly growing, publicly traded firm with offices in Southborough, Massachusetts and Broomfield, Colorado, seeks a Chemical Engineer 3 to work in its Colorado office. The Company is a leading provider of portable fuel cell power systems and is currently positioning itself for the rapid growth that will accompany the launch of several new platforms in late 2008 and beyond.
The Chemical Engineer will report to the Senior Project Engineer and will be a key member of an aggressive product development team focused on developing and commercializing portable fuel cell generators in the 50 W to 1 kW range. The Engineer will support teams in developing and demonstrating advanced component designs, including desulfurizers, catalytic partial oxidation reactors, tail gas combustors and others.
Primary Responsibilities. The Chemical Engineer 3 will primarily be responsible for the following:
- Apply engineering fundamentals to design prototype hardware and test articles
- Interface with vendors and fabricators, get quotes, lead fabrication efforts in a team of designers and technicians
- Transform preliminary concepts to finished hardware with little supervision, while staying within time and budget limits
- Propose experiments; design, build, troubleshoot, and maintain experimental facilities
- Develop experimental procedures and test plans and prepare safety reviews
- Work with designers, technicians, and engineers to manage test facilities construction and use
- Organize, verify, and analyze experimental and modeling results
- Compare experimental and analytical results
- Suggest conclusions and make recommendations
- Document all work in a laboratory notebook, memos, and reports
- Report and present technical results and progress towards goals internally and regularly to project managers
- Lead tasks and small teams. Work with project leader to manage specific tasks against budget, schedule, and resource limitations.
- Coordinate team engineers, direct and supervise technicians and designers
Qualifications. The successful candidate will possess a M.S. in chemical engineering, with at least three years experience in industry with increasing responsibilities.
- Strong fundamentals in heat and mass transfer, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, chemical kinetics and catalysis, separations, and numerical methods
- Familiarity with compressed gases, gas handling systems, thermocouple measurements
- Gas chromatography, thermogravimetry, mass spectrometry
- Familiarity with mechanical drawings
- Program management and technical leadership experience
The successful candidate will be comfortable in a hands-on experimental environment, a resourceful problem solver, a team-player with excellent interaction skills, and capable of rapidly integrating observations and results into new designs. This position requires the ability to lead project teams, complete multiple tasks effectively, prioritize work, and manage projects to specifications, schedules and budgets in a results-oriented environment.
The compensation package includes a competitive base salary, a full Company benefit plan and an aggressive stock option package. The Chemical Engineer 3 will be based in Colorado and will be expected to travel less than 10% of the time. U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency is required.
