Job Listing: Network Technician

MAJOR FUNCTIONS:

The network Technician is responsible for assisting Network Operations with the technical operations of the Division transport network to provide the highest quality data communications services possible to Division internal and external customers, consistent with the standards of large corporate transport networks and commercial online services. This position will be based in Chillicothe, OH, but will at times perform duties as needed in other parts of the Mid-Ohio Division and in particular Columbus, OH.



SPECIFIC DUTIES:

Participate in building and maintaining a state of the art transport network. Configure network elements to support voice, video and data traffic. Such configurations include but are not limited to OSPF, BGP, MPLS, Multicast, 802.3, 802.1q, Spanning Tree, DWDM and SONET. Work with Single Mode & Multi Mode fiber and their various connectors and tools. Extensive Route/Switch work in a TCP/IP environment. Provide support for video service delivery. Administer Juniper & Cisco IOS network firewalls & configure and implement access policies. Monitor network characteristics, maintain logs, and follow procedures to effectively respond to out-of-tolerance conditions or outages. Will be required to work various shifts as is typical for network upgrades and participate in a 24 hour on call rotation with other Network Administrators.

Analyze, diagnose and correct network hardware and/or software problems associated with the delivery of data transport to minimize network downtime. Contribute to the design, provisioning, and operations of the edge and backbone transport with emphasis on networking best practices. Participate in studies and research pertaining to development of new network systems and management tools. Write code, scripts, run and test programs, and write appropriate support documentation. Participate in Network Administrator team meetings and training sessions. Assist in installation and maintenance activities and in training of contractors and technical staff so as to optimize efficiency while maintaining network integrity. Maintain network documentation. This includes drawings of existing and proposed network designs, IP addresses of all devices on the network.

EXPERIENCE NECESSARY:

A Bachelor's degree in a technical field from a four-year college or university; or Associate's degree and three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Extensive Route/Switch experience is desired.

Strong work ethic, highly motivated with a will to succeed, is a must!

Strong knowledge of TCP/IP is essential. Good grasp of the OSI model and its layers from physical to applications. Working knowledge of LAN, WAN and an understanding of hub and spoke, ring and partial mesh network topologies.

10/100/1000/10000 Mbps Ethernet, IGPs, bridging, routing, and switching. CCNA, CCNP (BSCI and BCMSN).

Ability to handle various tasks simultaneously, organize, prioritize, make decisions and work efficiently and effectively under deadlines required.

The ability to learn quickly and apply that knowledge is desired, along with adaptability and being able to work in a team environment required.

Strong problem solving skills with the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written or verbal instructions.

Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Valid Driver's license.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Computer entry required. Communicating on telephone, in person and in writing with customers, vendors and other network users. May work under stressful situations when schedules and priorities conflict. Unscheduled hours required, particularly during network downtime. Ability to sit for long periods of time. Maintaining and installing equipment may require bending and lifting.
